Alte Burg Hersdorf

Hersdorf

Welcome to the Alte Burg!

Pure village life: Our castle (built in 1509) is located in the middle of the picturesque Schönecker Schweiz in the old and quiet village center of Hersdorf.
Our comfortably furnished vacation apartment in the former barn is the ideal starting point for hikes and explorations of the Eifel - from the volcanic Eifel with the maars to the High Fens and Luxembourg.

Guests with children are just as welcome as guests with pets.

Just come and relax and unwind.

We look forward to seeing you!

The accommodation

The vacation apartment is built into a former barn. It has a large living room with adjoining kitchen area, a fireplace, a dining area and a living area with sofa (can be converted into a sofa bed). A wooden staircase leads to the gallery with the sleeping area. From the entrance, however, you first enter the hallway with checkroom and the modern bathroom with walk-in shower.

Access for guests

In front of the vacation apartment is a loggia with seating and a partially covered barbecue area, which our guests are welcome to use by prior arrangement.

Our village

Hersdorf is a tiny village with about 400 inhabitants. Our castle is in a very quiet location. There are no shops in the village, no bakery and unfortunately no village pub. So bring something with you for breakfast the morning after your arrival. But there is fresh milk straight from the farmer. We will be happy to put a bottle of milk in the fridge for the first morning if you order in advance.
As in many places in the Eifel, the mobile phone network is not ideal. So you won't have reception everywhere in the apartment.
The nearest small supermarket, bakery, pubs, restaurants etc. can be found in Schönecken, about 4 km away.
More restaurants, museums and a good ice cream parlor can be found in Prüm, about 8 km as the crow flies from Hersdorf.

Plan your journey

Hersdorf is located near the old Carolingian town of Prüm, in the very west of the Eifel.

Travelling from Cologne (north): Coming from Cologne, it is best to take the route via Hillesheim at the end of the A1 motorway instead of the B51, as this will take you along smaller country roads instead of the busy main road. In this case, you will find supermarkets on the right as you enter Hillesheim and the excellent Roden bakery on the left.

Travelling from Koblenz (north-east): Take the A48 and A1 motorways to the Gerolstein exit and continue on the B410 via Gerolstein to Büdesheim. From there via Wallersheim to Hersdorf.

Travelling from the Rhine-Main region: The beautiful Hunsrück lies between the Rhine-Main region and the Eifel. From Wittlich, take the A60 motorway towards Prüm, but only as far as the Staffelstein exit. A rather winding country road, the L32, takes you to Seiwerath. At the end of the village, turn right onto the L10 towards Hersdorf and drive another 5 minutes to Hersdorf.

As we no longer have any shops or a bakery here in Hersdorf (only about 450 people live in the village), please bring your own food for the first few meals. If you come via Prüm, Hillesheim or Gerolstein, you can do your shopping in these towns. There is also a small supermarket in Schönecken where you can buy all your daily necessities. The nearest bakeries are also located in Schönecken. The supermarkets in all of these towns also stock wood for the fireplace. I will be happy to send you further shopping tips with exact addresses on request.
