The newly designed traveling exhibition is based on the comprehensive results of the book "War cemeteries in Rhineland-Palatinate. In memory of the dead, as a warning to the living," published in November 2021, and aims to bring the history, design and purpose of the war cemeteries closer to those involved, interested parties and laypeople. At the same time, it marks the conclusion of a very successful cooperation between the Rhineland-Palatinate regional association of the German War Graves Commission and the State Monument Preservation Directorate in the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate. The history, background, tasks, and form and design of war cemeteries represent a very complex subject area that is not always easy for laypeople to grasp and to which many citizens have increasingly lost touch in recent decades.

The significance of the exhibition also lies in its sad topicality when we are confronted with the horrors of the war in Ukraine and its many victims. Using Rhineland-Palatinate as an example, the exhibition provides visitors with basic information on the subject of war cemeteries. It enables a differentiated approach to the topic of "war and violence" and presents all the important historical and design aspects of war cemeteries in a concise form. In this way, it also provides interested laypeople with the knowledge they need to be able to "read" war cemeteries.
